Petulant here of Petulant Rumblings. Melissa graciously asked me to post my thoughts about a First Amendment Center Poll.
I finally get more than 4 hours of sleep and I have to wake up to yet another poll on how STUPID Americans are. The title of this USA Today article is: Most Think Founders Wanted Christian USA.Most Americans believe the nation's founders wrote Christianity into the Constitution, and people are less likely to say freedom to worship covers religious groups they consider extreme, a poll out today finds.
This is a nation of idiots! No one wants to learn. Force-fed propagandized sound-bites by activist Christians who want absolute control become truth and the stupid ass, give me another bag of Cheetos American Public believe it.
The survey measuring attitudes toward freedom of religion, speech and the press found that 55% believe erroneously that the Constitution establishes a Christian nation. In the survey, which is conducted annually by the First Amendment Center, a non-partisan educational group, three out of four people who identify themselves as evangelical or Republican believe that the Constitution establishes a Christian nation. About half of Democrats and independents do.
…Half say teachers should be allowed to use the Bible as a factual text in history class. That's down from 56% in 2000. Charles Haynes, a senior scholar at the First Amendment Center, says the findings are particularly troubling during a week when the top diplomat in Iraq gave a report to Congress on progress toward achieving democracy there. "Americans are dying to create a secular democracy in Iraq, and simultaneously a growing number of people want to see a Christian state" here, he says.
Haynes says the Constitution "clearly established a secular nation where people of all faiths or no faith are protected to practice their religion or no religion without governmental interference."
Hell, at least the number for teaching the BIBLE as factual is down!
From the First Amendment Center Poll that is taken annually:The right to practice one’s own religion was deemed “essential” or “important” by nearly all Americans (97%); as was the right to “speak freely about whatever you want” (98%) and to “assemble, march, protest or petition the government (94%),” Policinski said. “Still, Americans are hard pressed to name the five freedoms included in the First Amendment,” he said. Speech is the only one named by a majority of respondents (64%), followed by religion (19%), press and assembly (each 16%) and petition (3%).
Charles Haynes a scholar at the First Amendment Center says:“The strong support for official recognition of the majority faith appears to be grounded in a belief that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, in spite of the fact that the Constitution nowhere mentions God or Christianity. Of course, people define "Christian nation" in various ways — ranging from a nation that reflects Christian values to a nation where the government favors the Christian faith. But almost one-third of respondents appear to believe that the religious views of the majority should rule: 28% would deny freedom to worship to any group that the majority considers ‘extreme or on the fringe.’”
ARGHHHH! I need more coffee to read about pitiful polls and the SHEER lunacy of most Americans. Let's believe what we are told without any question of legitimacy. I hate POLLS and usually ignore them. This poll consisted of 1,003 respondents which is a small number. Yet, the basis of this poll is seen daily and does have relevance. People genuinely believe that the founding fathers were on some holy crusade to install Christianity. Hell, at the rate of misinformation in this country, Jesus will probably end up being assumed a signatory on the Constitution!
Go here for a fucking refresher.
Here is video of Jack Cafferty on the Situation Room asking: "What does it mean if most Americans believe the Constitution establishes a Christian nation?"
IT MEANS THEY ARE DUMB ASSES!
