According to a number of studies, homicide is one of the leading causes of death for pregnant women in the United States. Studies in Maryland, New York and Chicago determined that about 20 percent of women who die during pregnancy are murder victims. No, you didn't read that wrong: 20 percent of women's deaths during pregnancy. Almost 100 per year nationwide. Of course, that's probably their fault, right, conservative blogger Dan Riehl?
Some states do not even keep track of the number of a pregnant women killed by boyfriends or husband. But the Washington Post identified more than 1,300 during a 14-year period ending in 2004.
In short, the slut was askin' for it.I've no desire to insult the victim or her family and no one should. But the sad reality is that Jessie Davis was either the victim of poor self, or impulse control and poor decision-making, perhaps both, long before she became a murder victim. And to suggest that one isn't in any way related to another only endorses the notion that values don't matter. They do. And while Ms. Davis certainly isn't in any way directly responsible for her own death, had she been a bit more responsible with her life, it likely wouldn't have ended in such a tragic crime.
Now, her remaining child and all of the other children linked to this crime are victims of a crime far more significant than any one or two murders. They are victims of a culture where nothing much seems to matter anymore, so long as people are free to act or behave on impulse as they wish, with no regard for the consequences. And all Americans suffer as a result of that tragedy.
Conservatives are quite fond of blaming things like this on the decay of moral values in society, but Riehl couldn't be more off-base in thinking this is some new mile-marker in our slow slouch toward Gomorrah. Indeed, if anything, this story is a part of the very old, very common idea that a woman is the property of the man who she's sleeping with -- you poke it, you own it. And if a woman isn't willing to abort on demand, well, then her lover or bedmate has to take it into his own hands, and end the pregnancy himself. And he's right to. She's the one who brought it upon herself.
Right, insane conservative cobag Misha?
But I also will not shut up about the society and culture that led to that situation, a society where screwing around is not only accepted, it’s actively encouraged (turn on TV and watch any major “show” if you doubt me), where nobody is held to account for anything and where breaking up a family is more acceptable than daring to wag a finger at the home-wrecking slut in the first place.
And that’s just one symptom.
Nothing is sacred anymore, no actions are scorned and looked down upon, everything is a “valid life choice and nobody’s business” and our pre-teen children are being taught in school how to put on condoms, have anal sex and how to fist each other to orgasm.
Don’t give me any shit about how a crime like this horrid murder is a surprise to you. It was as predictable as a sunset, and it’s only going to get worse and worse until what used to be a moral nation has become a horror making the last days of the Roman Empire look like Sunday School.
It’s not your fault if you’re raped going down a back alley downtown in the middle of the night dressed only in a bikini, but let’s be honest here; you shouldn’t be fucking surprised either.
Reread that last sentence, and tell me that Misha and his ilk care a whit about the violence in society. Let me be clear: they don't. They see nothing wrong with a world where a woman dressed "inappropriately" should absolutely be frightened that she'll be raped, assaulted, or murdered. They see nothing wrong with a world where the penalty for conceiving a child with the wrong man is death. These things happen, and it's the women's fault, really. The fruit of their actions.
That Jessie Davis was a white woman bearing the child of a black man...well, that's buried so shallow beneath the surface of these two posts that a slight breeze blows back the dust on the racism tied to the sexism. One commenter on Misha's post says, "As far as the touchy subject of inter-racial breeding [sic] (AKA Animal Husbandry). Again, ever seen what kids do to mixed-race kids? They are, IN-MOST-CASES [sic], usually shunned by both parties, or have to be [sic] unusually extreme (behavior-wise) to be accepted by one or the other! [sic] WHY the fuck would you do this to a kid nowadays? Life’s hard enough without handicapping them from the get-go!!!"
In short, the slut deserved it for being a slut, and sleeping with...well, those people.
And of course, those people are just a step up from animals, right? "Animal Husbandry," and all that. And an animal's as likely to kill you as anything.
And the N*-loving slut should've known that. It's all wrapped up in a tidy package for the conservatives. What's wrong is that white women are sleeping with African American men, and nobody's stopping them. What's wrong is that people are able to have sex outside of marriage without being cast from society. What's wrong is that women are able to choose their own reproductive destinies (yes, anti-choice concern trolls, choice means choice). And it's comforting to know that these people pay a price sometimes for their mistakes.
That this price is one women have been paying for far too long now is conveniently left out. That the most famous example of this type of crime occurred but a few years ago, when Laci Peterson (a Latina) was killed by her (white) husband Scott is studiously ignored. That about 91 other American women will suffer the fate of Jessie Davis this year -- and that they'll come from all backgrounds and races -- is completely ignored. It breaks up the flow of the rant. After all, how can one blame this on the women if the women keep insisting on dying? How can you blame this on blacks if whites are killing too?
It's enough to make you think that Dan and Misha are just using this case to support their own racist and misogynistic feelings, and ignoring the clear message of the case, which is that we need to do more to prevent violence against women. After all, violence against women isn't something Misha or Dan are all that worried about anyhow.
